The COVID OlympicsVideo - sketch comedyHannah WilderAge: 16
This video was recorded from SAY Si's first live online performance, "Quaranteens: The Show." The sketch was written by Hannah Wilder and features Hannah as "Jeffrey Jefferson," Neil Flores as "Player #1" and Nat Lopez Romero as "Player #2." The scene reflects "New Perspectives" as, during the pandemic lockdown, peoples' perspectives of sports changed. Because sports were completely shut down for a time, there were comic videos on the internet of sports announcers commenting on everyday events as though they were thrilling sports events. This video highlights that phenomenon along with documenting the way that the quarantine created a new normal with sleeping patterns for many people.
Gripping Onto TimePoetryLorena AguilarAge: 16
A hush here and a silenced voice over there, hidden secrets lie in the areas least expected as suffering victims paint a smile on their faces every day to cover a deep and dark reality. Domestic violence defines the aggression within the place that is supposed to be secure, home, slowly deteriorating the lives of victims as they are forced to swallow their pains while relying on the strength of their fingers as they hang from a cliff. Time is a limited resource that is quickly depleting and flying out of our hands. We must not continue to waste the little time we have, but we must become social activists and give a voice to those who can't voice themselves, and we must lend a hand to those who hang on a cliff by a finger gripping onto time.
Silence is ViolenceVideo - Spoken Word Poetry PerformanceOlivia GarcesAge: 16
Silence is Violence was written during the summer of 2020 at the height of the Black Lives Matter protests during the COVID pandemic quarantine. The video was filmed live as a part of SAY Si's first live online performance, "Quaranteens: The Show." It contains original music by Olivia Garces as well as performances and spoken word written by the entire ALAS class. The video fits the theme "Social Activism" because it was our class' response to the social activism since many students could not participate in the protests in person due the pandemic quarantine.
