Bio

Nat Lopez Romero first joined SAY Sí when he was in middle school, moving from the WAM into the ALAS program as a high school freshman. In his six years at SAY Sí, cycling through school years and Stories Seldom Told, Nat has participated in many types of shows, projects, and cultish rituals. Nat has had at least a dozen personal projects throughout his time at SAY Sí, most of which will never see the light of day, but recently quite a few of them have been focused on the human experience, questioning: "how we see the world and how that impacts the way we go through it. What does it mean to be a person, to exist and have weight?" He is not trying to answer these questions-- but instead explore them. Nat’s not exactly certain what he wants to do with his life yet, but he knows he wants to tell stories, and will be attending Oglethorpe University in the fall to figure out the best way for him to do that.

Artist Statement

I am the center of my own universe, and most of my personal growth these past few years has been taken up by trying to figure out exactly what that means. "Diary of a Nonentity" (Full Title: Diary of a Nonentity: Records of One Who Does Not Exist, and Possibly Never Has) is simultaneously a completely predictable resolution to my time at SAY Sí and completely out of left field. You see, dear reader, I’ve always been a fan of voices -- podcasts, broadcast, radio, that kind of stuff. I still can’t sleep unless I hear people speaking. I’ve also known for years that I didn’t want to do a traditional play for my Senior Thesis. I wanted to do something more...installation-based. I wanted to build something my audience could explore. And then, well, you know how the past year and a half has gone. I still wanted to have something that people could explore rather than only watch or listen to -- I wanted something that could take another person’s decisions into account. So, I reviewed my options. The easiest one that could still produce something even slightly similar to my original plan was almost entirely based in things I had never done before and had no experience in. I am a theatre student who has issues asking for help for anything and needed to figure out how to make an admittedly simple choose-your-own-adventure game -- I was pretty much flying blind. But hey! It’s here! And now I can describe it instead of talking about myself! "Diary of a Nonentity" is only one piece in a much larger puzzle that you as the listener are not privy to, so try not to get too hung up on the whole story. All you really need to do is explore the room, listen to the tapes, and try to understand the Speaker. The Speaker is not me, but it is someone very close, who took a few left turns instead of a few right ones. He has his own struggles, and all he wants is for someone to listen to what he has to say. That’s where you come in.
