Artist Statement
For most of my life, I’ve lived in between. In between social groups, in between stereotypes, in between nationalities, and overall just in between. This has forced me to adapt and change to my environment making me see things from a point of view that the typical student hasn’t. I find myself having to constantly fight the stereotypes of not only Mexicans, Americans, but many other labels. While most would see this as a burden, I see it as a gift. I was gifted with many perspectives. I'm an Immigrant. I bleed Mexican blood. I speak fluent Spanish. I have brown skin. I have a family who fights for me non stop as we yearn for citizenship. And I am proud of my roots and the way I was raised. Like the other labels, this label has some bad stereotypes. And for better and for worse, I have been able to break through them. I'm an artist. I use photography and film as a way to stand against social injustices. I join programs like SAY Sí, a nonprofit high school artist program, and take part in events like Bexar Fest or Scholastic to further my art. I have been able to exhibit my pieces and sell multiple projects as I learn more and more about my artistic abilities. Say Si allows me to grow my voice by providing me and many others with professional mentors who pass on their knowledge. I constantly plan, take, and edit pieces, whether that be a photo or a film.
