Bio

Kathryn Hughes is a Hispanic visual and digital artist that specializes in Fiber Arts. Her work draws from her passion for foreign media and combines that with her struggle to find femininity. Even though she often creates art using very personal and sometimes sad subjects, she always finds a way to incorporate humor into her work. During her time in high school, Kathryn became a WAM Mentor, Student Liaison, and a Student Helper for her school's special needs program, during that time she realized that she loves working with youth and wants to pursue that as a career. Kathryn plans to take a gap year to fill out her portfolio and to make time to learn about becoming a future teaching artist.

Artist Statement

I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), and because of PCOS, my body is less feminine in all ways, and as I was growing up, I always wished I had a figure to look too when I needed to understand myself and my body. This piece is heavily inspired by my love for the Magical Girl genre in Japanese media, which is costuming and by my own experiences with female puberty. To me, a Magical Girl is a hero that stands for female empowerment, and to me, it's important that woman are able to feel empowered by their womanhood. This piece is the magical dress of a girl who wants to help others feel comfortable in their body. While making this dress, I was questioned on multiple occasions about the subject matter possibly being inappropriate, and my answer to that is: I want media to make the female menstrual cycle less taboo, and my solution is a dress that is covered in feminine products. I guess you could say I wear my passion on my sleeve.
