Bio

My name is Magoli Garcia,I was born and raised in San Antonio Texas. I graduated from Alamo Heights High school. I was a Media Arts student at SAY Sí. Most of my work focused around activism, attending rallies and protests. I have been a big advocate for Racial, educational, gender, sexual orientation equity. I have been involved in the following organizations including Say SI: Debate team, Varsity dance team, Youth Church Retreat Team, Internships with 2 County Judges, Junior Statesmen of America, Girls State Texas. My art consists of photography and educational documentaries. Most of my work is documentary style. I plan on attending DePaul University studying Political Science on a Pre-Law track. My future goals are to be involved in politics. I want to make a positive impact in my community and the way I want to channel that is through the legislation process.

Artist Statement

My passion to bring justice and equity to all was discovered when I was very young. These concepts were instilled in me through my Mexican and Bolivian immigrant family celebrating our cultures, my nanny Selina telling stories with the tears in her eyes of the days and nights she spent traveling to cross the border, and my Dad taking me to every art gallery opening and describing the chicano, black or asian american historical context behind each piece. I grew up in a home where it was understood education is power. Through my parents' sacrifices, my siblings and I had the privilege of attending the best school district in Bexar County. But even with being raised with the understanding of equity and attending the best schools, I couldn't be shielded from the injustices occurring all around me. As I entered highschool, this country entered a political battlefield. President Trump's inauguration was played in every single one of my classes my freshman year. My sophomore year after the Parkland school shooting, I walked out of class with my peers as we protested for gun control. My junior year, Dr. Ford’s testimony against Supreme Court nominee Judge Kavanaugh was broadcast in my english class. My Senior year a pandemic hit while the country went up in a national unrest against police brutality. These four photographs illuminate the built up anger, hurt and restlessness the black and latino community has pent up for centuries against racism, injustices, microaggressions and more that we have faced in this country. Even amidst a global pandemic, racial injustices don't stop. But our voices chanting in those streets could topple any of those skyscrapers. These photographs give me hope for the future. The future will be better.
