Artist Statement
These three artworks are based on fictional characters I made up at a young age. As a young girl, I loved superheroes and sci-fi-themed things, and I wanted to make my senior project about that. I chose to draw them in comic-book style because that’s what makes a super character a superhero. I drew the characters out in pencil and then outlined them in ink to give it more of a comic feel. David Marquez’s comic style inspired me. I also tried to make my characters’ origin stories detailed and specific. Some of the characters’ personalities are based on people I know and their challenges, like depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. I wanted these characters to be “super” but also relatable, and I also wanted to make clear that sometimes the barriers we overcome are what make us heroic.
